Empowering communities to increase resilience against climate change impact for improved food security

Final beneficiaries

Women headed household, disabled aged people (both men and women), widows, women accused as witches, aged both men and women of 60+ with households below the poverty line as defined by World Bank as identified during the baseline. Songtaba will employ a mixed approach using community-based assessment and mean test using quick poverty score approach to identify the final target beneficiaries. 

Main activities

Objective 1: To strengthen the planning and management of water resources in 3 project district assemblies to be responsive to climate change impact

Activities:

• Document lessons learnt and share the impact with local government
• Develop a guide to delivering social protection measures using experience from the project
• Advocate for adoption in target district Support in the formulation and gazette of environmental bye-laws
• Advocate and support the process of registering and renewal of national health insurance scheme cards for the target beneficiaries 

Objective 2: To empower 15 communities to recognize restoration of vegetation and multiple use of water with a focus on the impact of climate change

Activities:

• Support to rehabilitate 5 community dams through community interest work instrument
• Advertise and procure services of suppliers for trade fairs and coupons/vouchers
• Support tree planting using community interest work 
• Supply tree seedlings using coupons via trade fair
• Institute award scheme and hold bi-annual reflection
• Hold annual festival and celebration of success

Objective 3: To increase food security and income by 15% of 15 communities through dry season gardening and livelihood diversification

Activities:

• Support in developing irrigable land space for off-farm activities through community interest work instrument
• Provide seedlings and other irrigable facilities using the coupons via trade fairs 
• Provide livestock to women using vouchers via trade fairs 
• Provide 150 vulnerable people with conditional cash transfers
• Support honey production using vouchers
• Supply inputs for dry season gardening e.g seeds, pipes, sprinklers and watering cans for irrigation or water horses
• To support to create market linkages for the livelihood activities to increase income
