Sustainable Livestock Development Model for Improved Food and Nutrition Security in Sierra Leone

Target Group(s)

400 most vulnerable food insecure households (including pregnant and lactating women, households headed by women or teenage mothers, are EVD affected, have people with disabilities, orphans and children under-5)
34 poor households (involved in buck rearing), 50 existing service providers (i.e. input sellers, traders, butchers) and 50 stakeholders including community leaders, business association representatives, ministry officials and local NGO representatives

Final beneficiaries

Total 3.150 populations (534 HH X 5.9, average HH size), including 52% women
and 16% children under-5, will benefit from increased HH income and improved food and nutrition security.

Main activities

Selection of target beneficiaries and need assessment;
Formation and facilitation of producers group;
Development of Training Module on modern goat production and farm management;
Capacity building training of the targeted beneficiaries.

Objectives:

The overall objective of the project is “to reduce food and nutrition insecurity through supporting ‘innovative’ social safety nets projects to protect and strengthen the livelihoods of vulnerable households”. This will be achieved through implementing a sustainable livestock development model.

The specific objectives of the project are :

to enhance knowledge and skills of farm management among 434 most vulnerable and poor households
to increase production and income from goat rearing among 434 most vulnerable and poor households
to strengthen market linkage 34 buck rearers and 50 service providers with 400most vulnerable households
to engage government in supporting 434 most vulnerable and poor households to protect their livelihoods

Budget:

223 326 USD

Expected Results:

434 most vulnerable and poor households will have enhanced knowledge and skills of farm management ;
80% increase in the production and income from goat rearing among 434 most vulnerable and poor households ;
34 buck rearers and 50 service providers will have strengthened market linkage with 400 most vulnerable households ;
434 most vulnerable and poor households will receive government support to protect their livelihoods.
