Adaptation of Agriculture to Climate Change and Agroecology in West Africa

Faced with the agricultural challenges related to climate change, the ECOWAS Commission, through ECOWAP 2025, has set itself the mission of promoting sustainable production system intensification itineraries adapted to climate change in a context of agroecological zone diversity. In this perspective, the ECOWAS Commission launched in 2015 the West African Alliance for Climate Smart Agriculture.

Agroecology and adaptation to climate change projects in West Africa are therefore part of the response to the transformation of West African Agriculture in order to consider the new climate challenges. Such initiatives include the Agroecology Program, currently composed of the Support Project to the Agroecological Transition in West Africa funded by the French Development Agency and the Support Project to the Dissemination and Implementation of good practices for sustainable agricultural intensification funded by the European Union. Adding to this, the GCCA+West Africa Project Funded by the European Union and Expertise France is contributing to the West African regional effort to implement the Paris Climate Agreement, while the EU-funded Regional Project supports Climate-Smart Agriculture to promote ecologically intensive agricultural techniques and build knowledge and technical capacity for resilience to climate change.

Considering the close link between climate change and development, the ECOWAS and UEMOA Commissions strongly encourage collaborative work and synergies between the various ongoing and future projects. This vision also covers the partnerships to be consolidated between national, regional, and international institutions working on the issue.
