Niger Replenishes the Stocks of the Regional Food Reserve

In August 2018, 6528 tons of cereals were availed to the Republic of Niger by the ECOWAS Commission through its Regional Food Security Reserve. These products, consisting of 3,028 tons of maize, 3,000 tons of millet and 500 tons of sorghum, were meant to assist the most vulnerable populations in food and nutritional insecurity.

In accordance with its commitment at the highest level to replenish "grain for grain" the stock placed at its disposal, the Government of Niger has recently undertaken the replenishment of the stock of the Regional Food Security Reserve.

Discussions are currently in progress between Niger and the ECOWAS Commission for the replenishment of a first volume of 3,580 tons.

Like Niger, the other countries that also benefited from the products of the Regional Reserve (Burkina Faso, Ghana, Nigeria, and Mali) are also active in the replenishment of the stocks availed to them.

To recall, the grain for grain replenishment of the stocks availed to the States is key in preserving the capital of the Reserve and perpetuating the Regional Food Reserve System, and hence its capacity to intervene at any time in addressing various crises.
