Empowerment of Local Milk Processing Women in Togo: The WOMEN Project by GEVAPAF Improves Living Conditions and Incomes

In the Savanes region of northern Togo, particularly in the prefectures of Oti, Oti Sud, and Kpendjal, women processing local milk into wagashi stand out for their artisanal skills. Despite their traditional methods, these dairy products are highly prized by travelers along the national highway N°1.

This artisanal activity, concentrated in localities like Sagbiébou and Mango, involves about 500 women processors and 60 traders, working individually or in groups. The growing demand for wagashi, known for its nutritional qualities, now exceeds local production capacity, forcing the women to travel to multiple villages to collect milk, often at the expense of product quality.

Recognizing the economic potential of this sector, the NGO Gestion de l’Environnement et Valorisation des Produits Agropastoraux et Forestiers (GEVAPAF), with financial support from ECOWAS and Swiss Cooperation, launched the WOMEN project. This initiative aims to strengthen the organizational and functional capacities of women's groups, train producers in processing techniques and hygiene standards, provide work equipment, and construct sales points.

The positive results of this support include better management of clients and orders, harmonization of sales prices, adoption of group sales, and the securing of collection circuits around the sales centers of Sagbiébou and Mango. These measures have also reduced unsold inventory for individual processors, increased the transformation of local milk over fresh milk sales, and improved the quality and shelf life of cheese through the use of dehydrators.
